HOWES S-218. Grolier 100, 68. This case demonstarated the extreme pro-slavery position of the Supreme Court and helped to precipitate the Civil War. Dred Scott, a slave who lived in Rock Island, Illinois, and Fort Snelling, Wisconsin, both places where slavery was prohibited, sued for his freedom in 1846. The Supreme Court's decision against Scott exacerbated feelings between the North and South and seriously diminished the Court's credibility in the North. Bookseller Inventory # 63035
