Pp. xxxviii, 638, (1), engraved frontispiece plate of Falls of the Pigeon River; numerous un-numbered woodcuts. Publisher's original ornately blind-stamped purple cloth, lettered in gilt on the spine, yellow clay-coated endpapers, lg 4to (12 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches). This work was issued in two parts, the first part presents the text and the second part contains the steel-engraved plates and folding maps. Only the first part is offered here. Front endpaper has an inscription: 'gift of Mr. F. H. Luther, Nov. 1928.' Later from the research library of paleontologist Arthur K. Miller with his signature on the front endpaper. Spine is uniformly sunned so spine cloth has become tan - the gilt lettering is still easily readable, light wear to cloth and the head and foot of the spine, the text block is bright and clean; overall a very good copy.
