About this Item

ELLET, Charles, Jr. Report of the Location of the Western Portion of the Baltimore and Ohio Rail-Road, to a Committee of the City Council of Wheeling. Phila.: Printed by John C. Clark, 1850. 1st ed. 87 pp. Orig. printed wrappers. Front wrapper separated but present, light chipping to spine, very old waterstain to foot of pamphlet not affecting text, else a very good copy. Charles Ellet, Jr. (1810-1862) was a civil engineer and a colonel in the Civil War, mortally wounded at the Battle of Memphis. In 1842, he designed and built the first major cable suspension bridge in the United States in Philadelphia over the Schuylkill River. In 1849 he completed his bridge at Wheeling over the Ohio River, a span of over 1000 feet, the world's longest. This report deals with Ellet's (successful) proposal that the Baltimore and Ohio make Wheeling its western terminus to capitalize on the presence of the bridge. Bookseller Inventory # 54869
