(UNITED STATES NAVY). STANTON, Fred[erick]. P[erry]. Report of the Naval Committee to the House of Representatives, August, 1850, in favor of the Establishment of a Line of Mail Steamships to the Western Coast of Africa, and Thence via the Mediterranean to London; Designed to Promote the Emigration of Free Persons of Color from the United States to Liberia: Also to Increase the Steam Navy, and to Extend the Commerce of the United States. With an Appendix added by the American Colonization Society. Washington: Gideon and Co., 1850. 79pp. Slight staining to lower corner; else near fine in orig. printed wrappers. Sabin 69887. Stanton served as a Congressman from Tennessee from 1845 to 1855 and became chairman of the committee on naval affairs in 1849. He advocated the establishment of regular naval itineraries for both the Atlantic and the Pacific fleets and took a strong interest in slavery issues. (See DAB entry). Stanton's 30pp. report is followed by an Appendix prepared by the American Colonization Society containing speeches by noted individuals and state resolutions in favor of the colonization of Liberia by free American blacks.
