About this Item

While serving as Secretary of the Treasury under Jefferson, Gallatin wrote this report, now held to be the beginning of a consistent system of government sponsored internal improvements to navigation, travel, and internal commerce in the United States. This report summarizes the works and projects underway and calls for yet more, focusing especially on infrastructure such as roads and canals. Two additionalprinted letters are present here, one, from Robert Fulton, on canals, and one by Benjamin Latrobe dealing with railroads. The latter work, is the first printed work to advocate the construction of railroads in the United States. This is the second edition of this major work on early American industry and commerce. 8vo. 129 pp. Shaw & Shoemaker 39632; Howes G-27; Rink, Technical Americana, 4009. Removed from a nonce volume. Dog-ears. Rubber-stamp of the War Department Library on title-page. One page with early ink marks and notations in margin and underlining. Bookseller Inventory # 25372
