About this Item

Predates the 1874 edition, which most call the first edition of the series, a rather illusive book. Colvin completed much of the work for his series to be, and to get funding for his first book, he produced this on in seemingly VERY limited quantities, most for the Senate and Assembly members who would vote him his money. Covers rubbed, a rip to the smaller detail map, and the foldout map is cleanly distached, but in very good condition, else in good cond. 43 pps, plus one chromo illus and one detail of the map, and a large foldout map of the Adirondacks. Pencil official gift inscription to ffep. Riveting narrative of his 1872 journey mapping the Adirondacks, in which he found the source of the Hudson River, defined the split between the Hudson and Champlain regions, and pretty much blazed, mapped and measured every major peak in the Adirondacks. This was the first effort to map the Adirondacks since the 1830's, and the map herein may be called the first printing of the first accurate map of this region. Bookseller Inventory # 000101
