It contains much information and testimony on just about all aspects of Prisons and Prisoners. Almost entirely first hand accounts of prisoners etc. This copy was presented to General Henry Carrington from Bvt Major General J.P.C. Shanks who was on the Select Committee to Investigate the Treatment of Prisoners of War. Henry Carrington was a lawyer, professor, author and a Union officer in the Civil War and served in the west during Red Cloud's War. A noted engineer, he constructed a series of forts to protect the Bozeman Trail, but suffered a defeat at the hands of the Red Cloud. John P.C. Shanks was an Indiana Congressman who started on the staff of General John Fremont and later became the Colonel of the 7th Indiana Cavalry. Very good copy of the first edition. The book has 3/4 leather binding with ribbed bands and marbled boards and page ends. The book has some edge wear. No dust jacket. 1205 pages. Bookseller Inventory # 32208
