About the Book

We're sorry; this specific copy is no longer available. Here are our closest matches for Report of the progress of the Geological Survey of the State of Virginia for the year 1840. [First edition]. by Rogers, W.B..

Description:

Richmond, octavo, 132 p. ***Content: This is the last of Rogers s exceedingly scarce reports on aspects of Virginia geology - the earliest comprehensive reports on the State. The Virginia legislature imprudently eliminated funding for his Survey in 1842, and no final report or summary map was issued. This report chiefly describes the Tertiary marl region between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers, areas containing early Mesozoic strata, the district east of the Blue Ridge, and the great western coal region. A list of fossils from the Miocene marls was included, as was the discovery of beds of diatomaceous earth, the first discovery of its kind in the United States (Merrill, p. 185). ***Condition: A VG, fully complete, extracted copy in the original self wraps. Save for scattered light foxing, the text pages are typically fresh, clean and bright. The sewing and binding is very firm. No evidence of previous ownership. This is a sound copy of a rare publication with a limited circulation. Prime 69. Merrill, 1924, First One Hundred Years of American Geology. Hazen 8980. Not in BMNH. Not in Ward and Carozzi. This report relates chiefly to the Tertiary marl region between the Potomac and Rappahannock rivers, basins containing early Mesozoic strata, the district east of the Blue Ridge, and the great western coal region. A list of fossils from the Miocene marls is included, as is the discovery of beds of diatomaceous earth, the first discovery of its kind in the United States (Merrill, p. 185). ***Condition: A Good copy in later 19th century plain wraps, with original sewing. The wraps are sound, with only minor edge chipping; backstrip complete. The text pages show a variable degree of foxing, from moderate spotting to completely fresh, clean and bright. Hitchcock in 1879; slightly later library stamps on the front wrap and title page. A solid, complete copy of a rare publication with a limited circulation. Prime 69.
