Report of the sensational Boston trial of Leavitt Alley, a local teamster, for the murder of Abijah Ellis a local merchant. Ellis’s dismembered body was found in a barrel floating in the Charles River. The prosecution alleged that the motive for the murder was a financial debt. The case was based on circumstantial evidence, and Alley was ultimately acquitted. This case has been compared to the 1849 Webster-Parkman murder case[See Philips, Famous cases of circumstantial evidence. Boston, 1873, p. 149 et al.]. Bookseller Inventory # 000408
