This was an important early case in the application of the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment involving a Chinese laundry in San Francisco, The Supreme Court of California ruled against Yick Wo, as did the Circuit Court of the United States for the District of California, But these ruling were overturned by The Supreme Court, who wrote even if the law is impartial on its face, "if it is applied and administered by public authority with an evil eye and an unequal hand, so as practically to make unjust and illegal discriminations between persons in similar circumstances, material to their rights, the denial of equal justice is still within the prohibition of the Constitution." The ruling that laws with discriminatory intent were unconstitutional has been cited over 150 times since the Court's decision. This original judgment in the state court is rare, and does not seem to have been printed separately.
