About this Item

Disbarred by the Parlement of Paris Linguet, [Simon Nicolas Henri] [1736-1794]. Requete au Conseil de Roi, Pour M. Linguet, Avocat. Contre les Arrets du Parlement de Paris, Des 29 Mars & 4 Fevrier 1775. Amsterdam: Chez Marc-Michel Rey, 1776. 12mo. [ii], 260 pp. 12mo (6-1/2" x 4"). Contemporary mottled sheep, gilt spine, marbled endpapers. Light rubbing to boards, moderate rubbing to extremities. Some toning to text, internally clean. A nice copy. $200. * First edition. (Also issued the same year in Geneva.) This book concerns the sanctioning of Linguet's disbarment by the Order of Barristers by the Parlement. The complicated circumstances had to do with competition within the Order of Barristers and tensions between the Order and the Parlement. Linguet, admitted to the bar in 1764, was a formidable advocate. The immediate cause of his disbarment was "a tirade in which the author seems to have lost his temper and denounced the Order. This convoluted affair is described in Michael P. Fitzsimmons, The Parisian Order of Barristers and the French Revolution, 24ff. OCLC locates 4 copies in North America, 1 in a law library (UC-Berkeley). Another copy located at George Washington University Law School. Not in the British Museum Catalogue.
