About this title

Research Notes for Women at Play: The Story of Women in Baseball, Volume 2, is a chronological collection of public domain newspaper articles and public documents -- research information on which Women at Play was based.

Research Notes, Volume 1 documented women ballplayers of the late 19th Century, most of them Bloomer Girls.

Volume II documents six women who played on otherwise all-male teams from roughly 1890 through 1935:

Lizzie Arlington, who signed a minor-league contract in 1898
Alta Weiss, who pitched against men's teams throughout Ohio
Lizzie Murphy, who played semipro ball for over twenty years
Edith Houghton, who was playing semipro ball at the age of ten
Jackie Mitchell, who struck out Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig in 1931
Babe Didrikson, who pitched spring training against major league teams

Volume 2 offers the most important of the newspaper and magazine articles about these six players, some articles in their entirety and some in summary. Included at the end of the volume is "The Only Lizzie," an article about Lizzie Arlington.

This book will be of interest to baseball researchers in general, to women in baseball who want to know their history, to people who enjoy reading old newspaper articles, to high school English teachers who assign research topics and papers to students, and to all teachers interested in introducing students to primary source materials. In this volume you will find untold stories about women in sports; primary source materials; research paper materials; and the daily or twice-daily games played by barnstorming women.

From the Author:

When I put together Volume 1 of Research Notes, I knew there would be a total of three volumes in all, and I knew that I would publish them through Amazon. Along with Robin Koontz (who designed the cover) I knew from the start that the same photo would appear on the front of all three volumes. Because the front covers would look alike, Robin and I decided that a colored line running across the top of the photo, under the title of the book, would distinguish one volume from another. We started with green for Volume 1.

However, what neither of us really thought much about was the fact that POD (Print on Demand) books of fewer than 150-170 pages cannot have the book title printed on the spine. That's because the tolerance of POD machines isn't exact enough to assure that the spine title will print on the spine.

When it was time to publish Volume 2, Robin and I both realized that any individual or institution which purchased both volumes wouldn't be able to tell one from the other when both volumes were shelved spine-out. That was when Robin came up with the simple, elegant, and functional idea of wrapping the bar color around the entire book, so that it printed on the spine as well. Thus Volume 1, redesigned, has one green line that wraps around the spine. Volume 2 has two thin lines (one green, one purple) that wrap around the spine. This is far easier to see at a glance than it is to explain in words. Glance at the front cover and you will see the two thin bars above the title.

Robin and I and maybe even the POD machines are glad that this did not morph into a ten-volume set.
