Synopsis

Research in Reading in English as a Second Language is the outgrowth of the 3rd Annual Colloquium on Research in Reading in a Second Language presented at the 19th Annual TESOL Convention in New York City in April 1985. This anthology contains most of the papers presented at that Colloquium, plus selected additional papers on the topic, which were also presented at the 1985 TESOL Convention. Our purpose in bringing these papers together is to illustrate both the diversity and the richness of that research as well as to reflect on its common themes. Each of the contributing authors approaches the topic of research in reading in English as a second language from a unique perspective and investigates different aspects of a second language reading; however, general themes and common perspective underlie the papers. It is these common threads which reveal the current state of the art of ESL reading research.
