Large octavo. XXXII, 171, , XXXV, , 571, pp. Original gold-tooled leather with gold lettering on spine. Raised bands. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Ribbon marker. Publisher's booklet laid in. Remarkable facsimile edition of two of Pierre Charles Alexandre Louis' most celebrated works. In "Researches on the Effects of Bloodletting", Louis analyzed 78 cases of pneumonia, 28 of which proved fatal, and in a second series, 29 cases with four deaths. Among his conclusions were that pneumonia is never arrested at once by bloodletting and that the supposed positive effect on the progress of the disease was very much less than was commonly believed. Louis' "Researches on Phtisis" was the first important documentation resulting from the author's five years of hard work at Paris' La Charité hospital. Based upon a study of 123 cases, the monograph was praised not only for what it revealed about the disease in particular, but as a model of careful observation in general. Binding and interior in near fine to fine condition. Bookseller Inventory #
