Two tinted lithograph views. xvi, 428pp. A fine copy in orig. green cloth. Peto was a member of the English Parliament known for his role in constructing the British rail system. He travelled to America at the end of the Civil War to explore commercial prospects. He considers American population, agriculture, railways, mineral deposits, manufacturing and commerce. He was particularly impressed with the abundance of resources, even in the wake of the Civil War's destruction.
