About this Item

The true story of the First Marine Division's three regiments fighting in northeast Korea after the Marines landed at Wonson. The First Regiment , Second Regiment and Third Regiment moved tactically from Wonson, through Hamhung, the Sudong Valley, Sudong, Koto-Ri up to Haguru-Ri, through Toktong Pass to Yudam-Ni. Hagaru-Ri and Yudam-Ni are near the Chosin Reservoir. During the month of November, 1950, the Chosin Reservoir area was where up to seven Chinese Communist Force (CCF) divisions met the 1st Marine division in combat in the most horrible, frozen conditions possible; water froze in canteens, C-rations were solidly frozen, grenade spoons froze on to the bombs, bazookas rockets would not fire properly plus small arms firing pins froze. After several months of fighting and freezing, the marines performed a fighting retrograde operation ("Attacking in another direction") down the narrow main supply route (MSR) back to successful evacuation from the port of Hungnam on December 11th, 1950.Two sections of photographs, maps. About this title

Recounts the brutal fighting undertaken by the men of the 1st Marine Division during the Korean War when they were surrounded by a larger force of Chinese troops and had to fight their way out

From Publishers Weekly:

In Nov.-Dec. 1950, the 1st Marine Division and part of the 7th Army Division were surrounded and vastly outnumbered at the Chosin Reservoir in northeast Korea by Chinese Communist forces, but managed to fight their way to Hungnam where an armada of ships took survivors to safety. Wilson offers a simplified, journalistic version of this complex campaign. Drawing on veterans' reminiscences, he stitches together a traditional gung-ho account of Marine operations but has little to say about the Army battalions whose sacrifice, according to some historians, enabled the Marines to escape. The book is marred by the author's descriptive inadequacies ("Boom!" appears six times on one page, for instance) and excessive reliance on stiff-upper-lip dialogue recalled over a span of nearly four decades. Wilson is photo editor for the Los Angeles Times. Photos. Military Book Club dual main selection.
