Three volumes. Vol 1: 1817-63; Vol. 2: 1863-65; Vol 3: 1865-66. 645, 607 and 684 pages, including index. Publisher's green cloth. Former owner's bookplate on two volumes. Volume one has crease to front end paper, otherwise these are fine, bright copies. Nevins, "Civil War Books" `Volume 1, page 246; "Bigelow alternated verbatim extracts from contemporary letters, speeches and dispacthces with a sensible, informative commentary on American wartime diplomacy." Bigelow was United States consul general in Paris 1861-65 and U.S. minister to France 1865-66. Two additional volumes of "Retrospections" were edited by Bigelow's son and published in 1913.
