About this Item

Translated by Mrs. Wilfrid Jackson. With illustrations and Decorations by Frank C. Pape. London and New York (1924). Octavo, black cloth ornately gilt-stamped. 357 pages. A very good copy. Frank Cheyne Pape (1878-1972) is best known for his illustrations to books by the American writer, James Branch Cabell, and the French writer, Anatole France, which appeared in the 1920's and inspired something of a Pape cult. His best work was characterized by what Cabell himself described as 'opulent in conceits and burgeons and whimseys' and is filled with humor, charm and often grotesque characterization.
