Description:

Quarto (9 1/2 x 6 3/4"). 124pp. Original yellow-stamped olive cloth, with yellow lettering to spine, and green and yellow lettering to front cover. Pictorial endpapers. Woodcut frontispiece and title page. Scarce first edition of Mary E. Marcy's "Rhymes of Early Jungle Folk," a children's book introducing the first woodcuts produced by the famed American craftsman Wharton Esherick. Illustrated with over seventy vibrant and fanciful woodcut illustrations, this book reveals the foundation of Esherick's direction as an artist. The splendid woodcuts accompany the author's poems on evolution, prehistoric man and the geological history of the earth. They move from the dinosaurs through geologic change to early man, on to the development of man as a hunter-gatherer and builder, taming fire and horses. Mary E. Marcy covers virtually all of the plant and animal kingdoms.Minor shelf wear. Corners and head and tail of spine slightly rubbed. Pages slightly age-toned along edges. Minor closed tear along upper margin of pages 13/14, 17/18, and 85/86 (not affecting lettering nor woodcuts). A 2" closed tear along fore-edge of last page (123/124), thus slightly affecting the illustration.Binding and interior in overall good+ to very good condition. Bookseller Inventory #

Book Description Schiffer Publishing Ltd, United States, 2015. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. This facsimile edition of a 1922 children's book features seventy-three dynamic and whimsical woodcut illustrationsathe first woodcuts that the famed American craftsman Wharton Esherick produced. A high-quality replica authorized by the Wharton Esherick Museum, this book reveals the foundation of Esherick's direction as an artist. Edited by Museum director Paul Eisenhauer, it also features a foreword by Museum assistant curator Laura Heemer. The illustrations frame verses that introduce children to the principles of evolution, a highly controversial topic at the time: the book was published three years before the famous Scopes "Monkey" trial of 1925 that resulted in the inclusion of the teaching of evolution in public schools. Drawn by the excitement of the controversy, Esherick threw his passion into these illustrations. Afterward he would go on to carve over 300 woodcuts, leading to decorative carving, and ultimately, to Esherick's realization that he was a sculptor rather than a painter.
