About this Item

New York: Barse & Hopkins (1916). Small octavo, original gilt-stamped green publisher's cloth, in a dust wrapper. 192 pages. Covers a little bumped, and dust wrapper is worn, with a few chips missing near spine extremities. Contemporary ink inscription on front endleaf. Top of text block lightly bumped, affecting the top margins of a few leaves only slightly. Aside from defects noted, very good copy of the First American Edition. Rather scarce in original dust wrapper. Service is sometimes referred to as the "Canadian Kipling" for his rollicking ballads of the frozen north, such as The Shooting of Dan McGrew and The Cremation of Sam McGee. Service was born in England and moved to Canada when he was twenty years old in 1894, living for eight years in the Yukon. He was an ambulance driver and correspondent for the Toronto Star during World War I, which provided much of the material for Rhymes of a Red Cross Man. Bookseller Inventory # 6040
