Saint Paul: Rice & Bell, 1869. [2],[47]-55,[3],xvi,[57]-300pp., plus fifty-six pages of advertisements and folding map. Original half blue leather and printed boards, spine gilt. Spine chipped at headbands. Ex-library, with cancelled bookplate on front pastedown. Internally clean, advertisements bright, map with one short tear to the center of the outer edge, otherwise fine. Overall a very good copy. First in a promised series of directories for St. Paul published by Rice & Bell, containing a alphabetical list of residents and business listings organized by interest. Accompanied by a well-executed engraved map of Minnesota's capital, with an index of street names and of recent additions, as well as by numerous and diverse advertisements printed on several colors of paper bound into the front of the volume. Also with short essays proudly charting the success of the city ("The St. Paul Chamber of Commerce. What Has It Done?", and "Saint Paul: Its Progress, Capabilities and Destiny"), and promoting its commercial prospects ("Saint Paul: Commercially Considered").
