About this title

I love the primal quality of these poems, many of which remind me of the so-called “death poems” of the Japanese and Chinese poet-monks of old in that, despite their weighty subject matter, they often resound with a courageous, startling playfulness. These poems deftly navigate the waters of nostalgia and tenderness without giving way to sentimentality, and in that way, serve as a reminder that ache—like a scar—only broadens with age. -Michael Meyerhofer, author of Leaving Iowa, Damnatio Memoriae, and Blue Collar Eulogies.

About the Author:

Ron Self was born in Columbus, Georgia and raised in Hurtsboro, Alabama. He now lives in Columbus, but from his back porch he can look through the shrubbery and across the Chattahoochee River to see a tiny bit of an Alabama hillside. He is a United States Army veteran, an attorney/musician, and teaches in the Turner College of Business at Columbus State University. He is a past president of the Georgia Poetry Society and regularly hosts poetry open mic readings in Columbus and Phenix City, Alabama. He and his wife, Sharon, have two grown sons and four grandchildren. He still wants to be a cowboy or an archeologist when he grows up.
