Edition not stated, believed first edition, fine in black cloth boards, gilt and red spine titles and accents. Light corner bumps, top page edges dyed red/pink as issued, light creases at some upper outer page edges, approximately 4 inch long horizontal tape stain on the rear free endpaper. Overall fine+. Price clipped pictorial dust jacket is pretty beat up, edgeworn, many chips up to 1/2 inch missing and some tears but is otherwise essentially complete. In seventeenth-century England war was a man's business, but Lady Anne Fairfax was no ordinary woman. When her husband rode off to fight for his neighbors against King Charles, she rode with him. In this true story of the English Civil War, Sir Thomas Fairfax and his wife Anne and their little daughter Moll are most lovingly portrayed, yet not more so than the hills and woods, country towns and churches, customs and skills of seventeenth-century England. Miss Sutcliff Knows her countryside and writes of the battles fought as though she had been in them. Bookseller Inventory # 001386
