About this Item

First printing. Cloth, 344 pps. with recommended reading list. INSCRIBED ON THE FRONT PASTEDOWN AND WITH AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER DATED aUGUST 7TH, 1921 TO THE SAME RECIPIENT LAID IN. The author expounds his views on the hypocracy of organized religion versus true righteousness. From the preface: "My contention is.that religious rites, "duties" and performances.Church-going and religious "Services" of all kinds, from the silly street corner piffle of the Salvation Army and the hysterical rantings of Methodist and Baptist "revivals" to the equally silly and solemn mummeries of Pontifical High Mass---are of no value or efficacy whatever as substitutes for and of almost none as aids, incentives or stimulants to righteousness". The laid in letter is four sides (one folded sheet) on the author's stationery blindstamped Halifax, Nova Scotia; in it he recommends this book to the recipient, a Miss Louise Buchanan, and tells her she should make it compulsory reading for "all pupils in the schools coming directly under the jurisdiction or control of yourself or your sister." A tight, near fine copy, quaint prev. own. bookplate front free endpaper, very slight sunning to the spine and minor bumping to the extremities. Bookseller Inventory # E492
