DJ: VG: chipping and edge wear, small missing pieces at head and heel covers; wear to tip covers. Volume 1 is buckram with tan boards with dark brown overlay on spine with gold lettering on spine and Japanese characters on tan portion of front board; no head or foot band. Volume 2 has tan cloth boards with 3/4 maroon overlay on spine and gold lettering on spine and gold Japanese characters on front board on tan area, head and foot bands. Both have maps as endpapers. 1181 pp. Told primarily from the Japanese viewpoint, this book traces the dramatic fortunes of modern Japan from the invasion of Manchuria and China to the atom bomb. This book recaptures a catastrophic conflict which not only revolutionized the Japanese way of life but marked the beginning of an ideological and racial contest for all of Asia.
