About this Item

presumably first (and only) edition and printing, although not specifically indicated; German is the frame language of this publication with extensive Italian-language quotations throughout; issued in paper covers and subsequently bound in 19th century marble-pattern hard covers; from the library of August Sauer, the noted Austrian specialist in 18th century German literature (founder of the periodical Euphorion, editor of the standard 42-volume Grillparzer collected works); Sauer was a colleague of Schuchardt's at the University of Graz from 1883-1886; the present book may well have been a gift from the author; glued label on the spine with the title and author written by hand, maybe by Sauer or by Schuchardt; Sauer's bookplate affixed to front pastedown and the bookplate of Glenn Gilbert, a linguist who was a later owner, laid in; indentations in the covers, perhaps from being tied with cord, the heel of the spine is chipped ca 2 cm and the crown is torn with a loose flap ca 4.5 cm, edges sunned, pages moderately foxed, hinges and binding still tight, overall rating Fair to Good; this hard-to-find item would be of interest to students of Italian literature, in this case popular folk poetry, and also to collectors of Hugo Schuchardt's work (Schuchardt, known as the maverick of his day, knew an incredible amount about linguistics as well as literature, reaching far beyond Romance linguistics to creole languages, Georgian, and Basque, among many other seemingly unconnected topics; he is considered the father of creolistics for example); hard covers (perhaps commissioned by Sauer) display a beautiful marble patterning, no printed lettering on the covers; 4to -- 293 centimeters tall, 146 numbered pages. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
