Title: The River Reader

Publisher: The Lyons Press, New York

Publication Date: 1998

Binding: Hardcover

Book Condition: Fine

Dust Jacket Condition: Fine

Edition: 1st Edition

*First Printing (Full # Line). Book is Fine with a hint of staining on two small areas on the mottled white boards, it's hard to see because of the look of the boards. Inside is sweet, unread, likewise the binding is pristine and the corners sharp and there is no edge wear. The DJ is as New with a slight soiling on the backside in one small area. But I will call it fine/fine but the dj looks close to perfect. The book consists of an anthology of the biggest and best known writers in the Nature Field. For example; Barry Lopez, Mark Twain, Teddy Roosevelt,Rick Bass, Henry David Thoreau, Anne Dillard,John Wesley Powell,John James Audobon, Ernest Hemingway, Joseph Conrad, Meriwether Lewis, Robert Burns, and many others. Superb looking book in fine condition with great writers at their best. Bookseller Inventory # 000103

Synopsis: Twenty-two writers, as diverse as Barry Lopez and Rick Bass to Mark Twain and Ernest Hemingway, celebrate rivers, sharing their visions on the topic throughout the world.

Review: The selections in this inaugural volume of what promises to be a superb classic on contemporary nature writing are simply stunning. Spanning three continents and two centuries, River flows through banks lush with the words and observations of Thoreau and Hemingway, Barry Lopez and Annie Dillard, Mark Twain and Meriwether Lewis, John James Audubon and Joseph Conrad. "Pick a river, any river," challenges Murray in his broad introduction. "If you sit beside it long enough you will hear many things, and most of them are worth waiting for." He might just as well have applied the test to the pieces he's chosen here. Pick one, any one, it really doesn't matter. Each is worth a good deal more than the time it will take to dip in, read, and savor. --Jeff Silverman
