About this Item

With frontispiece and 76 plates. Original two-tone publisher's cloth, some light wear to spine and a few small spots to covers. Inscription to fly-leaf. First edition, second printing of this travel guide. "This book deals with that part of the French Riviera which is commanded by the Great Corniche Road - the part between Nice and Mentone - together with such places as are within easy reach of the Road." Treves (1853-1923) a British surgeon, was perhaps best known as the doctor who cared for and treated John Merrick, the "Elephant man," who suffered from Proteus syndrome. Treves first met Merrick while still a medical student, and it was years later when he was head surgeon at London Hospital that he was to help him; Treves published two papers on Merrick in the British Medical Journal. He later served as physician during the Boer War, for which he was knighted by King Edward VII, who was the subject of Treves' most famous surgery. Shortly after the war, Treves abandoned his medical practice to become a writer. BMC, XXV, 296. Bookseller Inventory # 11629
