About this Item

First Edition, first printing with Binding A. Publisher's imprint on the spine in upper & lower case letters. Finely woven linen-like cloth. Perfect type on p.34, line four: "Toto on." Perfect type numeral on page 121 & perfect type on numeral and caption on page 129. Printed on different color paper stocks. {These are all the points for the first edition, first printing outlined in Paul R. Bienvenue's The Book Collector's Guide to L. Frank Baum, p.41.} All that said, this is a candidate for a professional conservator/restorer. The binding is essentially a wreck, BUT nothing on the binding is missing. The spine cloth is worn but would come back with a good underlay. The front board is a bit age-dulled with a worn spot at the lower foredge. The text block is tight and clean with no marks, no scribbles, no crayon. No sewing would be required of the text block. The pictorial front flyleaf is missing a piece 2 inches by one inch at the lower foredge corner. The "This Book Belongs To" page has a name and date of Christmas 1909 in pencil (this could be erased, but I can't imagine anyone would as it is essential to the history of the book). The front flyleaf and the Book Belongs To page are detached at the gutter. Bookseller Inventory # MP14-247M
