About this Item

A very detailed lithograph by Casimiro Castro (1826-1889) and J. Campillo (mid 19th century) from their sweeping book "Mexico y sus alrededores, colleccion de monumentos, trajes y paisajes.Mexico", which depicted the monuments, scenery and costumes of the day. Some of these views of the city of Mexico were taken from a balloon, and depicted the areas around the Alameda of Mexico. It was published in Mexico by Imprenta Lithographica de Decaen in 1864. This print measures 12.25" x 17.5". This book documents the late colonial, independence, and early national periods in Mexico—from about 1730 to 1850. An examination of this "middle period" offers an explicit examination on rural history. Compared to city dwellers, rural Mexicans seldom felt governmental reforms or institutional changes immediately. As colonial land tenure patterns shaped Indian communities, continuity rather than change characterized life in the Toluca region until the Ley Lerdo, the desamortization law of 1856. During this period the vast majority of Mexicans lived in the countryside. "Mexico y sus alrededores, colleccion de monumentos, trajes y paisajes.Mexico" was dedicated to studying and illustrating both aspects of city and rural life during this period in Mexican History. Overall this print is in very good condition with some foxing, staining and creasing. Bookseller Inventory # gl704d
