Harley was Prime Minister from 1710 to 1714 after serving as Speaker Of The House Of Commons. he was imprisoned in the Tower Of London in1715 although he was stoutly defended by Swift and others. Harley was a book and manuscript collector and accumulated one of the most important collections in England, much of which went to the Crown after his death.
