From School Library Journal:
Grade 9 Up-At over 400 pages of text, with 87 pages of notes, this book expands on Barbara Harrison's A Ripple of Hope: The Life of Robert F. Kennedy (Lodestar, 1997). Mills ignores most of the gossip and mythology surrounding the Kennedys and instead focuses on the professional life of the dichotomous seventh child of America's foremost political family. Fighting for attention in his large family, Bobby Kennedy learned to wield power behind the scenes. The book recounts how he orchestrated his brother's successful presidential candidacy and then served as Attorney General in JFK's administration, always exhibiting the conflicting traits he carried with him his whole life-what Mills terms "good Bobby" and "bad Bobby." Good Bobby tried to right social wrongs and serve the underprivileged as a senator and presidential hopeful. Bad Bobby was a ruthless and calculating politician, willing to make enemies to get a job done, e.g., rid America of organized crime. The author keeps the spotlight on her subject's accomplishments; personal glimpses are related in terms of his career. However, the "good Bobby" comes through clearly through the descriptions of his devotion to the underdogs in American society, and to his own family and its legacy. The writing is approachable although Mills has an annoying tendency to use sentence fragments for dramatic effect. Students will appreciate the excellent bibliography and extensive index. Black-and-white photos of Kennedy and those integral to his life enhance the well-researched text.
