About this Item

published Chez l'Auteur, im Selbstverlag; three-page introduction by H. G. Rawlinson "Dharwar, May 1918"; cloth covers show some soiling, minimal shelfwear, bookseller's notations on front cover, overall rating Very Good+; ASSOCIATION COPY: signature of the orientalist "David T. Ray, Karachi, India, December 20, 1942" on the ffep (around 1960, Ray presented the book to one of his close friends, the anthropologist, William H. Gilbert, my father); this book is no doubt the first and only edition and printing; it also appears to be the first printed work by Pithawalla, who was a noted Parsee/Zoroastrian/Indian scholar, Principal of the Bai Virbaiji Soparivala (B.V.S.) Parsi High School in Karachi from 1920 to 1946; Pithawalla was still living in Poona when his book was published; this hard-to-find work would be of interest to collectors of books on Zoroastrianism, Old Persian/Indo-Iranian language and history, and the great rock inscription at Behistun; cloth covers are beige with brown lettring on the front; the text contains photographs, charts, and a b&w fold-out reproduction of a drawing "The Behistun Rock" by J. N. Rustomjee; 16mo - 6 9/16 inches tall, 64 numbered pages. Bookseller Inventory # 000927

Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
