Description:

Presumed first printing (1974 copyright date matches LOC number; no mention of any later printings; publisher's 1947 statement not much help.) Charming autobiography of one of the first (and loveliest) rodeo cowgirls, active in the nineteen teens and twenties, touring the globe in competition and even stunt doubling for Estelle Taylor in the silent film "Cimarron Land Rush." NOT taped up; NOT ex-library. Book would grade "near fine" but for one flaw: A patch at the bottom of the rear free end paper, adjoining the spine, has adhered to the rear pastedown. This patch -- a half inch deep and an inch-and-a-half wide -- is still there, but has ripped away from the RFE and remains attached to the pastedown -- possibly dating from glue seepage in the original binding process. This is a minor flaw, mentioned for completeness. Otherwise a solid, clean, problem-free book with some delightful period photos. (Long skirts, really big hats.) Back panel of DJ has two small eighth-inch tears at bottom, one of which has become a triangular chip. Jacket would still grade very good, but general wear from handling at spine and front edge, presenting as a white frostiness where red ink has started to wear off, reduce this red DJ with B&W photo of subject in full regalia on her rearing horse to "good plus." On the FFE, the rare signature in blue ballpoint: "To Hafa -- Vera McG. Farra." (DJ back panel explains that, at the time of writing, author was living in North Fork, Calif. with her husband, Homer Farra.) No major tears and no repairs -- a handsome piece of rodeo and equestrienne history. Reduced from $177. Bookseller Inventory #
