Centenary history of the Roebling family, known world wide for the design, engineering and building of some the county's earliest suspension bridges and eventually for it's Trenton and Roebling, New Jersey-based wire-rope works. The family patriarch, John A. Roebling, came to America in 1831 from his native Germany; his earliest suspension bridges were ones over the Monongahela at Pittsburgh in 1945, ne over the Niagara River in 1848, the Cincinnati-Covington Bridge at Cincinnati (1863-1867) and most famously, New York's East River or Brooklyn Bridge. During the early days of construction, in 1869, John A. was injured in an on-sire accident, devloped tetanus and died. Work continued under supervision of his son, who also suffered an cassion accident that left him incapacitated as a result of the bends. By the 20th century, the Roebling Wire Works was a major supplier of wire rope, providing material for, among its many major projects, the George Washington Bridge. Bookseller Inventory #
