About this Item

Sole edition: Refutation of Pierce's attack on the Roman Catholic Church (i.e., his Primitive Rule of Reformation), attributed on the title-page only to "S.C." but written by Cressy, who became a Benedictine monk after converting to Catholicism. Provenance: "Fr. Jo: Girlington" (and a motto) in old ink on title-page; stamps of the Rev. Edw. R. Prendergast. Later in the library of a Catholic seminary and with its bookplate. Evidence of Readership: Some old notes, probably Girlington's, in margins and at end. 8vo. [14], 322 (i.e., 328), [6] pp. ESTC R1088; Wing (rev. ed.) C6902; Clancy, English Catholic Books, 273. Contemporary sheep framed in blind double fillets; binding worn and rubbed, leather chipped at head of spine, joints just starting from top. Hinges (inside) cracked, front free endpaper detached ? somewhat fragile. Ownership evidence as above; Front pastedown with institutional bookplate. Title-page with contemporary inked inscription and shadows of pencilled notations; title-page and first dedication page with private collector's rubber- and pressure-stamps, with a number of other pages also stamped. Scattered early inked corrections and marginalia throughout; back free endpaper with annotations. Upper outer corner of first dedication page torn away. Some light age-toning and occasional spotting.
