About this Item

8vo. Brown cloth spine with paper label and tan paper over boards. 144pp. Very good. Very slightest bit of edgewear -- overall tight, clean, attractive. Handsome first edition of this tale by the younger brother of reknowned Chicago poet Eugene Field. Roswell (1851-1919) was a journalist and collaborated with Eugene on "Echoes from the Sabine Farm" (1891), and like his brother was quite well known in his day. He inscribes the half-title page in ink as purple as his prose: "With the author's regards to / Charles L. Fifield, who shows / his consideration for authors by / purchasing their books. / Roswell Field / Chicago / August 1905." Fifield's delightful custom bookplate on front pastedown depicts King Alfred reading a book before a fireplace, and beneath the caption: "King Alfred, deep engrossed in book / Forgot the cakes and let them burn / Remember Thou, the book thou took / Ought to its owner soon return." Above Alfred is the caption "Aelfred Mec Heht Gewyrcan," which translates "Alfred ordered me to be made," the inscription on the famed 9th century Alfred Jewel. Bookseller Inventory # 19338
