Book Description L. C. Page & Company, Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A., 1909. Cloth. Condition: Very Good+. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Two volume set, with both volumes illustrated. Published in 1909 as the third impression of the 1904 first edition. Volume 1 examines the approach to Rome, the Pincian Hill and the Campus Martius, along the Tiber, the Capitoline Hill, the Forum, the Palatine and the Esquiline, the Quirinal, the Viminal, and the Villa Borghese, the Baths of Caracalla, the Appian Way, the Coelian, and the Colosseum, concluding with the Emperors of Rome. Indexed, 306 pages. Volume 2 tells the story of Papal Rome, the earlier churches, the Greater St. Mary's and the suburban churches of St. Lawrence and St. Agnes, and St. Paul's and St. Peter's. The focus then shifts to a morning at the Vatican and ancient art, the Vatican and other galleries of renaissance and modern art. Volume 2 concludes with the bishops of Rome. Indexed, 294 pages. Both volumes have frontispieces separated from the title pages by intact tissue guards: the Arch of Titus for volume 1, and Raphael's "The Transfiguration" for volume 2. Volume 1 contains 43 additional illustrations. All photographs are creatively posed, displaying a quiet and beautiful Rome, technically finished in a soft pictorial style black-and white. The foldout map of ancient Rome is in fine condition, located between pages 92 and 93. Volume 2 contains 40 black-and-white images, many of masterpiece works of art. Both volumes are finished with matching boards of green cloth, with architectural decoration and coats of arms for important families and locales in red and bright gilt. The spines are in faded gilt with facsimiles of Roman coins as decorations. The spine heels and crowns, as well as board edges, show normal shelf wear for books of this age and there is slight storage scent which probably can be minimized with techniques well described on the internet. Additionally, the front board of volume 2 has scratches penetrating the cloth near two of the coats of arms. The outer and bottom page edges are deckled for both volumes, as issued from the printer. The top edges are smooth and finished in bright gilt. The front binding end papers are starting on volume 1. Both volumes remain tightly bound with corners better described as square than rounded. These volumes contain imagery of Rome that simply is not available to the ordinary tourist today and thus will be a tremendous resource to those doing armchair travel or planning a trip to Rome. And for those who have traveled in Rome, these volumes will provide context and will supplement the adventures already lived. Very nice additions to the traveler's library at an attractive price.
