About this title

Discusses the private political disagreements of de Gaulle and Roosevelt, and looks at U.S. relations with the Vichy government

From Library Journal:

A career diplomat, Aglion came to the United States after the fall of France to represent De Gaulle in recruiting support for the Free French. He soon learned that most French emigres here supported the Vichy regime, and few had any use for De Gaulle. Aglion assigns to the French emigre influence no small share of the blame for Roosevelt's distaste for De Gaulle. Though he acknowledges that De Gaulle, too, was difficult, Aglion is rather endearingly partisan; when the giants clash, De Gaulle is "formidable," FDR "stubborn." This account of the Roosevelt-De Gaulle tensions is a useful and interesting contribution on the Allies in World War II. Nancy C. Cridland, Indiana Univ. Libs., Bloomington
