About this Item

Small 4to. Black cloth spine and brown paper over boards, dust jacket. viii, 587pp. Very good/very good. Mild jacket edgewear. A tight and handsome first edition of this blockbuster subtitled on front jacket panel "The Saga of an American Family" -- a cultural phenomenon whose runaway success and follow-up television miniseries got Americans interested in family genealogy on a wide scale for the first time. Fine author signature and inscription in black fineline on the front flyleaf to an Iowa university president and spouse (whose ownership signature appears near top): "March 18, 1977 / Barbara and Walter / Peterson -- warm wishes / from the family of / Kunta Kinte! / Alex Haley." In addition, this copy has signatures from five of the miniseries cast members tipped to both sides of the half-title page -- in order: Lorne Greene ("John Reynolds," 1915-87), tiny "L. Greene / Paramount Studios / Hollywood Calif." in blue ballpoint on oddly trimmed 2¼" X 1" envelope fragment with tape stains; Edward Asner ("Captain Davies," born 1929), in black ballpoint on heavy stock 5" X 3" card dated by him 28 March 1989; Sandy Duncan ("Missy Anne Reynolds," born 1946), in blue ballpoint on heavy stock 5" X 3" card dated by her 31 July 1978; George Hamilton ("Stephen Bennett," born 1939), in blue fineline on heavy stock 5" X 3" card dated by him 2 November 1973; and Leslie Uggams ("Kizzy Reynolds," born 1943), in black fineline on heavy stock 5" X 3" card dated by her 21 June 1985. The original mailing envelopes for Asner, Duncan and Hamilton are also laid in. A superb and unusual copy, inscribed by the author and with signatures of five miniseries cast members neatly tipped in. Bookseller Inventory # 40720
