About this Item

As-new, unread autobiography. "'Rose Wilder Lane' contains new material added to the original version of this part of her life published by Rose herself in 1919 as 'Diverging Roads.'" With no children of her own, Lane about a dozen years before her death in 1968 adopted 27-year-old Harvard Law School graduate Roger Lea MacBride as her grandson and sole heir to her writings and her mother's. MacBride was co-creator, with Edwin Friendly, Jr., of the subsequent television series "Little House on the Prairie" and co-producer of "The Young Pioneers." MacBride became the first presidential elector in U.S. history to cast a vote for a woman when, in the presidential election of 1972, he voted for the Libertarian Party slate of John Hospers for president and Theodora "Tonie" Nathan for vice president. MacBride then himself became the Libertarian Party's presidential nominee in 1976 (losing in a landslide, as they always do.) Rose Wilder Lane, a highly paid popular journalist of the 1920s, wrote her non-fiction classic "The Discovery of Freedom" in 1943, helped her mother rewrite her oft-rejected manuscript "Pioneer Girl" into the successful "Little House on the Prairie" series, and is acknowledged -- with Isabel Paterson and Ayn Rand -- as one of the founders of the modern American libertarian movement. 236 pp. trade paperback. Reduced from $62. Bookseller Inventory # 004193
