About this Item

First Paperback Printing of Stoppard's absurdist (and breakthrough) drama, elaborating the lives of two characters from Shakespeare's "Tragedy of Hamlet," in which Rosencrantz and Guildenstern wait behind the scenes, "whiling away their time on the fringes of the major play." 8vo: 96pp. French blue and pink card covers printed in black. About Fine (one corner slightly bent, inked surname to half-title, trivial stray marks to covers. "The action of Stoppard's play takes place mainly 'in the wings' of Shakespeare's, with brief appearances of major characters from Hamlet who enact fragments of the original's scenes. Between these episodes the two protagonists voice their confusion at the progress of events of which-occurring onstage without them in Hamlet-they have no direct knowledge." Rosencrantz and Guildenstern had its first incarnation, in 1964, as a one-act, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Meet King Lear. The expanded version under the current title was first staged at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe on 24 August 1966, by the Oxford Theatre Group. It debuted in London with a National Theatre production at the Old Vic. Awarded the New York Drama Critics Circle winner for Best Play, in 1968. Stoppard adapted the play for the 1990 movie of the same name, directed by Stoppard and starring Gary Oldman, Richard Dreyfuss, Joanna Roth, and Ian Richardson. N. B.
