About this Item

Description:

KB51.130, [ii] ff of the facsimile; 193, [v] pp of the commentary. Facsimile is bound in full blind-stamped brown leather with 4 raised bands to the spine, working braided leather and brass closures. Interior has 93 miniatures in gold and colours (with particular emphasis on rich indigo blues and carmine reds) and over 600 coloured initials on faux parchment. In basically as new condition. This volume is numbered 14 in Arabic numerals and was part of the restricted "not for sale" original run of 60, another 600 were sold with Roman numeral numberings. The dark green cloth octavo commentary (entirely in German) has gilt to the spine and except for a small pencil erasure is basically as new. Large green cloth box with front pastedown and gilt to spine has minimal shelf wear. Truly a spectacularly beautiful complete set, in one of the scarce early numbered fascimiles. The Romance of the Rose is one of the most famous medieval love stories, created about 1280 by the painter Berthaud d'Achy, based on a manuscript by Guillaume de Lorris. It is considered to be the most successful and influential work of medieval French literature. The allegorical story portrays the experience of a long dream where the hero enters a walled garden and falls in love with a rose. There, he meets many allegorical figures, some of whom try to help him, others of whom try to stop him. Jealousy, intrigue, lust, and tender love are all here in this romantic story, beautifully illuminated by D'Achy and reproduced in an exquisite facsimile. A lovely copy. Manuscript in old French, commentary in German. Heavy for international shipping. ; Folio 13" - 23" tall. Seller Inventory # 12587
