About this Item

First printing. Cloth, 218 pps. with index. Illustrated. Though not much remembered today, J. Ross Browne was a highly popular 19th century travel writer, humorist, and essayist. Less known is that he was also in government service and acted as a confidential agent for the U.S. Treasury Department beginning in the 1850s. He was asigned to ferret out the misdeeds of federal officeholders in the far West (California, Oregon, Washington State) as well as in Minnesota and Texas. It can be imagined how fertile a ground these areas were for an investigator and reformer; his government reports were themselves often satirical, witty and humorous and many extracts are printed herein. Fine in lightly edgeworn dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory # E2573
