About this Item

1912. Collectible. First Edition, thus. Near Fine to Fine. No inscriptions or book plates. With Illustrations from Life Studies by Adelaide Hanscom and Blanche Cumming. Omar Khayyam was a Persian mathematician, astronomer, philosophy, and, most notably, poet, who lived from 1048-1131. This beautiful book was translated into English verse by Edward Fitzgerald, who is considered the principal authority on Khayyam's poetry. Enhanced with twenty-eight exquisite double-mounted photos of watercolours of 'Persian life-studies', protected by glassine guards. Photos tipped-in to grey matt card which are likewise tipped-in to the parchment. Embossed Art Nouveau design & lettering to the front board depicts a grapevine."A Book of Verses underneath the Bough, a jug of Wine, a Loaf of Bread and Thou." Headpieces adorn each page of the Fitzgerald text. Hanscom, one of the leading US women photographers of the era, used as her models Joaquin Miller, George Sterling & George James. Costumes by Orlof Orlow, who also consulted on Persian symbolism. Embossed tan leather binding has gilt at head; marbled endpapers; hinges absolutely sound; internally clean & beautifully preserved; magnificent illustrations; deckled pages, one page with nick from when pages were originally cut. Leather shows only minimal wear, a touch rubbed at spine and corners. A lovely book. Truly one for the collector. More photos available on request. Bookseller Inventory # B3911
