Book Description Thames & Hudson, London, first edition, 1969, 1969. Cloth, small 4to, xiii, 135 pp, 4 plates. 41 illustrations, 4 in colour. Rubens's two great a|tarpieces have a double significance. They mark his return from Italy in 1608 and the beginning of his successful career in Antwerp, Also, as Professor Martin points out they exemplify the two major, and contrasting aspects of his art, the turbulent 'Raising of the Cross' representing the Baroque element, in contrast to the more reticent Classicism of 'The Descent from the Cross'. With a warning that the terms 'Baroque' and 'Classical' are not always unequivocally apt, Professor Martin goes on to develop his argument that the two triptychs are characterized by strikingly different methods of composition. These altarpieces have inspired a large body of criticism and commentary down the centuries, and Professor Martin has assembled a collection of these writings, ranging from the subjective views of Rubens's contemporaries to the analyses of modern art historians. He includes comments by painters (Delacroix, Reynolds), a great art historian (Burckhardt), an early connoisseur (Roger de Piles), and an eighteenth-century biographer (J. F. M. Michel). Very Good in slightly used dustwrapper. Seller Inventory # ABE-13256
