About this Item

"In the spring of 1972, I began through laborius study a determined quest to find some common denominator that would provide concrete answers. I was not searching for an easy almost 'magical' key to improvisation. Years of serious training had already taught me that the Psalmist David's command to 'play skillfully with a loud noise' meant hard work, preparation and concentration. After innumerable hours of experimentation and analysis, I experienced a burst of insight all the more exciting for its simplicity. The secret to improvisation is found in one of the most simple of musical elements, the interval. The interval is that one cohesive and elemental structure from which all scales, melody and harmony are constructed and held together. I began to see consistent patterns and mathematical relationships that exist only because of the space and distance between tones or between chords. My excitement grew as one rule gave birth to the next and basic formulae began to emerge and fall into the total pattern. In essence, the Intervallic System of Improvisation was created. Thus, The Intervallic System of Improvisation is based on the solid structure inherent in the deepest nature of music itself. Each of the concepts has many remifications. I suggest that each of these concepts be mastered in all of its variety by employing the technique of 'saturation'. That is, overuse and overwork a concept so that it can be more sparingly applied in an appropriate and functional way to a hymn. The rules I have presented are only working principles designed to help the musician grasp the material easily. The rules are not fundamental laws of evangelistic music. Be bound by the rule only until it is mastered; allow it to provide structure and discipline from which your own abilities may freely spring. This book is in no way conclusive. Volumes could be written on each concept and rule if each were developed to its fullest extent. Let it suffice to say that the system really works. The serious musician can learn the fine art of improvisation, once thought to be the realm of only the gifted." This book has 266 pages and is profusely illustrated. The text contains NO internal marks whatsoever. Overall, this is a VERY GOOD copy of this EXTREMELY SCARCE title. Size: 4to - over 9" - 12" tall.
