About this Item

The society's business "shall be conducted in Exeter, or such other place or places in the West of England as may be determined . . . , but under no pretext shall such business be transacted at any Tavern, or other place of public entertainment." The objects of the society were "to enable the industrial classes of society, First ? to provide a certain fixed weekly allowance during Sickness, also Medical Attendance and Medicines. Second ? To secure deferred Annuities (superannuated pay) to commence at certain given ages. Third ? To secure Endowments for Children, on attaining the age of 14, 18, or 21 years. Fourth ? To secure a certain sum at death, not exceeding ?100."
