About this title

Illustrated in full color. When Sam's dad makes him angry, Sam decides to run away from home. He loads his backpack, says good-bye to his dog, and heads out the door. But where does a little boy go in the pouring rain? After some time spent sitting under the porch, Sam wonders if he shouldn't give his parents one last chance. Sensitively written and richly illustrated by Kate Greenaway Award-winning artist Gregory Rogers, here is a true-to-life story about a universal childhood experience.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2?Sam, who is about six, gets very angry with his dad and decides to leave home. He packs, hangs out nearby in the pouring rain until he feels sad and lonely, and then returns home tentatively. Both parents give him warm support, and the child decides to stay and give his father another chance. The text is quiet and uncomplicated, reflecting the space Sam's dad gives him so he can move through his problem on his own. Rogers's stunning watercolor and colored-pencil illustrations echo this equanimity. Physical perspective varies boldly from illustration to illustration, giving readers a sense of inclusion. With each shift in perspective, they are invited to refocus their own intellectual and emotional outlooks, too. Gray is just as skillful with his text, using a few evocative metaphors rather than lots of language, as when Sam, camped outside his house, reads himself A. A. Milne's story of Eeyore losing his tail. The heavy rain storm developing along with the boy's resolution to leave home says a lot, too. An important element of this story is its unsentimental portrayal of a father whose respect for and confidence in his son means more to him than exercising his own power. Please note that Sam doesn't run away as the title indicates; rather, he leaves home.?Liza Bliss, Worcester Public Library, MA
