First edition. 8vo. in green cloth with spine lettered in gilt. First issue with pagination error, preface numbered to "iv" and single contents page numbered "viii" on verso. 295 pp. plus publisher's ads at rear printed in red and black; title page printed in red and black. Illustrated with engravings. A tight, generally fine example, very slight rippling to the front cloth and a crease to the front free endpaper. The author recounts his purchase, in the 1840s, of a house and small farmstead in eastern Connecticut between Hartford and New London, and the subsequent work done to beautify it. The second part of the books consists of chatty hints for improvements of country houses with chapters on porches, roads and shade, landscaping and gardening. This followed by suggestions on landacaping of railways, city and town parks, public gardens and burying grounds. Bookseller Inventory # GE15557
